Golden Monkey Tracking: Discover a Rare Primate Treasure

Enter the bamboo forests of the Virunga Mountains and encounter one of Africa’s most charming and elusive primates — the Golden Monkey (Cercopithecus kandti). This rare and endangered species is found only in the Virunga volcanic range, which spans parts of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Golden Monkey tracking offers a lighter, faster-paced alternative to gorilla trekking — perfect for primate lovers and wildlife photographers alike.

Why Track Golden Monkeys?

These endemic primates are known for their:

  • Striking golden-orange fur on their backs and cheeks
  • Playful, energetic behavior
  • Agile movement through dense bamboo and montane forests
  • Complex social structures and family dynamics

Unlike gorillas, Golden Monkeys often live in large groups of 30–100 individuals, making sightings lively and dynamic.

Where the Experience Happens

Tracking takes place in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda’s smallest but most scenic park, nestled on the border with Rwanda and DRC. The bamboo forests here are the perfect habitat for Golden Monkeys, offering a vibrant backdrop for your trek.

What to Expect

Your day begins with a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) rangers, followed by a guided trek through the bamboo-covered slopes of the volcanoes. The trek is relatively easy compared to gorilla trekking, typically taking 2–4 hours round trip, depending on the monkeys’ location.

Once you locate a troop, you’ll spend up to one hour observing their behavior — leaping from branches, grooming each other, foraging for shoots and insects, and curiously watching you in return.

Perfect for Wildlife Photographers

The monkeys are not shy, and their playful energy and fast movements make for an exciting photography session. Early morning light filtering through the forest canopy provides beautiful, natural lighting for unforgettable shots.

Conservation & Impact

Golden Monkeys are endangered due to habitat loss and human encroachment. By participating in this experience, your park permit helps fund:

  • Wildlife protection

  • Forest conservation

  • Community outreach and education

  • Ranger salaries and patrols
