Virunga Primates Safari (4 Days / 3 Nights)

Duration

4 Days Days

Track gorillas. Spot golden monkeys. Glide across Lake Mutanda.

This 4-day safari offers the perfect balance of adventure, wildlife, and relaxation. Centered around the lush Virunga region of southwestern Uganda, this tour brings you face-to-face with two of Africa’s rarest and most fascinating primates — the endangered mountain gorilla and the golden monkey.

In between treks, you’ll enjoy a peaceful canoe ride across Lake Mutanda, surrounded by volcanoes and birdlife. It’s an unforgettable short escape for nature lovers, primate enthusiasts, and eco-travelers.

Good to Know

Gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking are conducted in small groups and led by expert UWA guides. These activities require moderate fitness and may involve hiking in steep terrain. Porters are available to assist on treks.

Itinerary

Arrive in Kisoro and transfer to your lodge, where you’ll check in and settle into the peaceful highlands. In the afternoon, take a guided canoe ride on Lake Mutanda, a beautiful crater lake nestled between volcanoes. The dug-out canoe experience offers a tranquil introduction to the region’s landscapes, birdlife, and local fishing culture. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

After an early breakfast, head to the park headquarters for your gorilla trekking briefing. Then set out into the misty rainforest with a small group and professional rangers to track a habituated mountain gorilla family. Spend an awe-inspiring hour observing these majestic creatures in their natural setting. Return to your lodge for a well-deserved rest and an evening by the fire.

Today you’ll explore the bamboo forests of Mgahinga National Park in search of golden monkeys, a rare and endangered primate species found only in the Virunga. Watch them leap between branches and forage in the undergrowth during your guided tracking experience. Afternoon at leisure — you may visit a local village, craft market, or simply relax at the lodge.

After breakfast, check out and transfer to Kisoro Airstrip or the Rwanda/Uganda border depending on your onward plans. Optional add-ons include Batwa forest experiences or cultural village visits.
