Volcano Hiking: Conquer the Virunga Peaks
Gorilla trekking in Uganda is one of the most profound and exhilarating wildlife experiences in the world — and a highlight of any trip to East Africa. This adventure allows you to come face-to-face with the magnificent Mountain Gorillas, a critically endangered species and one of our closest living relatives, sharing over 98% of our DNA.
Mt. Muhabura – "The Guide" (4,127m)
The highest of the three, this strenuous yet rewarding hike takes about 6–8 hours round trip, leading you to a crater lake at the summit and panoramic views of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. On clear days, you may even see the glacial peaks of the Rwenzoris and the shimmering waters of Lake Edward.
Perfect for seasoned hikers looking for a challenging ascent and incredible photographic moments.
Mt. Gahinga – "The Pile of Stones" (3,474m)
Ideal for moderate hikers, this 5–6 hour trek takes you through lush bamboo forests, home to golden monkeys and a variety of bird species. At the top lies a beautiful swamp-filled crater, a unique and peaceful reward for your effort.
This trail also offers insights into local ecology, geology, and conservation initiatives.
Mt. Sabinyo – "Old Man's Teeth" (3,669m)
Sabinyo’s rugged, deeply eroded peaks resemble worn molars, giving it its local nickname. Hiking Sabinyo is a true thrill — with steep ridges and wooden ladders helping you ascend to the summit where three countries meet (Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC).
It’s the only place in Uganda where you can stand in three countries at once!
